In a latest liberal outburst, the Khap Panchayats of Haryana have decreed that 1. it will be mandatory for men to wear dhoti-kurta and women jamphar (full-sleeve shirt)-ghaghra - the states traditional attire- at least one day in a month. 2. Women must be confined to choolha chauka 3. Young boys must learn to honour the pagdi and the maryada of the dhoti These measures, according to one of the sarpanch, will ensure the growing menace of same-gotra marriages is curtailed. His words, not mine... Now, I am not a left leaning pseudo liberal by any stretch of imagination, but this is madness! Women confined to choolha chauka? I mean, this is wrong on so many levels! If they say confined to it, they automatically assume it is meant to be an imprisoning experience! And why should women be confined anywhere? And what is so inherently repellent to men about cooking? And gimme a break, imposing a jhamohar ghaghra? Kahaan imoose karogey, Gurgaon mein? Faridabad mein? Chandigarh mein? How is this essentially different from the Taliban imposing a head-to-toe burqa and chador? And guys, youre not getting it any better, either - if we were in Haryana, we would be forced to wear Dhoti-kurta-pagdi, and it doesnt take once a month to change quickly to once a week, and then western wear allowed only once a month... Abhi bhi time hai, we must raise our voice against these regressive forces. They already have sufficient representation in the legislature, but liberals and progressives by their very nature have little support. We can ensure that at least we can make ourselves heard online. #DownWithDiktats
