In a recent study published in the BMJ, 61,000 women were tracked over 20 years to measure fracture incidence and mortality as related to milk consumption. Women had a slightly increased risk in fracture (HR = 1.09), but more surprisingly was that with each added glass of milk, mortality increased. Women consuming three glasses/day were almost twice as likely to die (HR = 1.93) with a more pronounced effect with every glass of milk. Whats interesting to note is that this negative effect was not seen in men (45,000 followed), and that fermented milk (cheeses and yoghurts) did not have the same effect.
