NC benefiting from kashmir tragedy, Oct 4, 2014). In a vested political campaign about a certain ex NC MLC false and misintended information is being circulated in the media when the only crime committed by this person was that he dared to stand up against injustice and raised his voice for those being harassed. The construction material is being ferried into Pahalgam in light motor vehicles instead of trucks to avoid the attention of the authorities in blatant violation of the court directions, locals environmental activists said. They said the former NC MLC was using his influence to carry illegal constructions in the areas notified and brought under Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) knowing that after the devastating floods in south Kashmir and Srinagar, administration was busy with the relief and rehabilitation of the flood-hit people and that the illegal constructions would go unnoticed. The High Court, following the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Peoples Welfare Pahalgam, had imposed a blanket ban on the constructions in Pahalgam until the new Master Plan was framed. The locals alleged that police and some officials of the PDA were abetting the NC MLC in carrying out illegal constructions. They said PDA was facilitating the transportation of the construction material. Recently, two officials of the PDA themselves carried illegal constructions and built huts on the riverbanks at Batkoot near the Abshar Park. Locals said PDA was not monitoring the repair work and violation of building permission norms. They said illegal constructions continue in the vicinities of Pahalgam downstream Lidder River despite being notified and brought under PDA by the government. The areas were notified following the recommendations of the committee formed by the High Court as well as Kashmir University’s Environment Assessment Impact Committee. A top official of the PDA, who wished not to be named, said the former NC MLC had issued threats and published pamphlets asking that if anyone came in way of him carrying constructions in the area, they would be dealt with seriously. The official said that the former NC MLC had carried illegal constructions after the floods but the PDA authorities involved local clerics and Masjid committees and demolished it. “We have a two-tier system in place with six officials of the PDA in addition to the municipality officials ensuring that no construction material comes into the area and no illegal constructions are carried,” he said. risingkashmir/nc-benefiting-from-kashmir-tragedy/
