In a spasm of baby boomer indulgence I bought a bicycle. Bicycles have changed since the time June Bug and Bobby Earl taught me how to ride a bike Mommie Dearest bought for me from the Sears Roebuck catalog when I lived in Oklahoma. I bought a 27 speed Trek bicycle. 27 speeds. (gulp) I took a bicycle riding class. No, not to learn how to ride, but to learn about the rules and regulations of bike riding. Bikes and laws have evolved from the time I owned a 5 speed bike and rode in NYC from the East Village to Mid-Town during rush hour. I see people riding on sidewalks in San Francisco and Oakland. In the aforementioned class, I learned it is against the law to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. (C.C.P. cite to follow) Its dangerous to ride a bike on the sidewalk, in addition to running into people, the sidewalk is uneven and that can cause accidents. I got fenders. Most bikes I see dont have fenders. The salesperson told me fenders are good for preventing water, oil, dirt, etc from flinging off the tires onto my legs and butt. I also bought two bicycle locks and the seat is secured with a hex screw. Im paranoid about bike thieves. Im looking forward to biking on the bay bridge and around Golden Gate Park.
