In all the years Ive been watching football, there have only been two quarterbacks I would have considered sure things, Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck. EVERY other quarterback came with some kind of question marks. Brees was too short, Rodgers didnt have enough experience because he was a JUCO transfer, Tom Brady was too skinny. Yet still every year, the experts force all manner of prospects into the conversation and half or better dont even end up being back ups for long. This year is no different. Neither of the top two prospects, Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota are even close to being sure things. They both have a lot of the attributes youd want in franchise signal caller, but there are questions teams will need to answer before drafting either of them. Is Winston grown up enough to be a leader? Are the interceptions he throws from bad habits that can be corrected or does he just not see whats happening on the field? Can Mariota stay in the pocket and run a conventional offense or will a team who drafts him have to run some sort of hybrid offense? We dont know, but we will get plenty of chances to get ideas about whats going to happen in the next 5 months from the college championship game, combine, pro days, team rumors and from sports news sources. We wont actually know whats going on in any teams draft room on draft day, but we should be able to stay on top of things well enough to at least have informed opinions. Stay tuned, it will be fun.
