In an exclusive, CNN was given a report by a team of international war crimes prosecutors and forensic experts. They’ve been analyzing thousands of photos of bodies of Syrians allegedly killed while in custody of President Bashar al-Assad’s government, and pouring over documents and witness testimony. They say the report provide direct evidence of the systematic torture and killing of up to 11,000 citizens by the Assad regime – smoking gun evidence strong to support an international criminal tribunal. The bodies in the gruesome photos are sickeningly reminiscent of concentration camp photos, with bodies that show signs of having been starved, strangled, brutally beaten and subjected to other tortures before being killed. The next question is what will be done about it? President Obama drew his line in the sand with chemical attacks. When that was crossed, the line got erased, and the whole matter was taken over by Assad’s pal, Vladimir Putin. Other nations might be moved to act by this new evidence, but they didn’t exactly rush to Obama’s side to stop Syria the last time around. Oh well, there’s always the United Nations Security Council. They could refer this to the International Criminal Court! Except, hold on: Russia has veto power over that. You know, this report may give us proof of more than Assad’s cruelty. It may also prove that as much as some people hate for America to police the world, if we don’t do it, nobody will.
