In an unprecedented show of support for Midland’s school district, Abell-Hanger Foundation, Apache Corp., Chevron, Concho Resources, Henry Foundation, Pioneer Natural Resources, Scharbauer Foundation and Warren Equipment Co. collectively dedicated $6.25 million to the Midland ISD Education Foundation. The Reporter-Telegram Editorial Board didn’t select these combined eight companies and foundations as its Newsmaker for 2014 because of what the donation did — filling close to 300 vacancies is what has been reported — but what we believe it means. The school district is not being left out on an island to deal with deficits related to employee recruitment and retention and student achievement. These foundations and companies, in fact, were leading an effort to say they were all-in to create a school district that represents what Midland should be.
