In another group on Facebook there has been some discussion about the proper amount of shank and toe feathering for Marans. The Marans standard calls for “lightly feathered shanks and outer toes”. But what exactly does that mean? I did a good bit of research and looking at photos before writing this. There are three breeds that would seem to be pretty close when it comes to shank and toe feathering; Langshans, Faveroles and Marans. Let look at Langshans first. Their breed standard calls for “feathered shanks and outer toes” and Ive attached a photo of a Langshan female as an illustration. The Faverole breed standard calls for “slightly feathered shanks and outer toes” and again Ive included a photo for comparison purposes. For Marans, again, the standard calls for “lightly feathered shanks and outer toes” and a photo is included. From the all the photos of Marans I have looked at, of birds in both America and France I find that typically Marans have the least amount of shank and toe feathering of the three breeds were talking about. Poultry standards can sometime seem vague and hard to understand or even leave things open to interpretation. Theres no doubt that what is A to me may be B to someone else. So heres my two cents worth on Marans shank and toe feathering; to me Marans shank and toe feathering should not be as heavy as those of the Langshan or the Faverole; but their feathering should not be so light that you can see portions of their shanks or toes between the feathers.
