In country areas where jobs are scare anyway this will have a major impact, then there is the role on impact with less money being spent in the local community. Renewable energy target: Wind turbine producer axes 100 jobs as Government plans to lower RET Thu 23 Oct 2014, 11:48am Australias largest wind tower producer is sacking 100 staff after the Federal Government revealed plans to scale back the Renewable Energy Target (RET). Keppel Prince Engineering, based in Portland in south-west Victoria, told workers this morning it would be mothballing its tower fabrication division and consolidating other parts of its business. The company had repeatedly warned changes to the RET would lead to job losses. The Coalition reviewed the target which requires that 20 per cent of the nations power come from renewable sources by 2020. The legislation specifies that target as 41,000 gigawatt hours but the Government said it wanted to reduce the RET to around 25,000 gigawatt hours. State Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said the job losses were devastating for the region. My thoughts are with all Keppel Prince employees and their families. This is a traumatic time and the last thing that Portland needed, Ms Tierney said. Keppel Prince job cuts > Approximately 100 positions will be axed > fabrication division to be mothballed > Warrnambool crane operations to be closed > Some management administrative roles cut I find this situation totally reprehensible as it was preventable if the Liberal Government didnt use renewable energy and renewable energy jobs as their plaything. We need a Government that is attuned to the needs of our economy and provides sustainable local jobs for local people. Earlier this year a review of the RET, headed by businessman Dick Warburton, presented a range of options to the Government including recommendations to scale back or wind up the RET completely over time. Keppel Prince warned in August the recommendations would be devastating for the industry. The RET was initially set up by the Howard government to encourage investment in electricity produced from sources such as solar and wind, but the Rudd government expanded the RET scheme to mandate 20 per cent of all electricity would come from renewable sources by 2020. abc.net.au/news/2014-10-23/wind-turbine-producer-axes-100-jobs-after-ret-changes/5835516
