In early December 2014, Supervisor John Avalos introduced a Resolution before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors that was blatantly anti law enforcement in nature. This Resolution painted members of the SFPD with a broad brush by comparing the actions of the members from the Bernal Heights Park OIS to the officers involved in incidents in Ferguson Missouri and in New York City. In one section of this Resolution Avalos states the SFPD inherits the outcomes of this racially biased system that are failing people of color in fundamental ways. Where does Avalos come off making such a statement and what is he basing this on? This language is completely offensive to members of the POA and Avalos rhetoric appears to be political theater at its worst in this City. On December 16, 2014, I appeared before the Board of Supervisors to voice outrage from the POA. After sitting in the chambers for over 6 hours I was given two minutes to respond under public comment. Prior to my statement I was able to speak with several members of the Board of Supervisors who also saw the divisiveness of this Resolution. During the discussion and debate Supervisor David Campos weighed in that the POA (namely me) is causing a disservice to its members and is harming its members. This was not surprising coming from Campos who has demonstrated his anti-law enforcement agenda for years going all the way back to when he was appointed to the Police Commission. Eventually common sense prevailed and the Resolution failed to pass. I will continue to follow this Resolution while it makes its way through committee and hopefully it will not return to the full Board. Marty Halloran SFPOA President
