In early times,people identified with the tribes they belonged to.The idea of several tribes joining togather to form a nation came much later.The frist roots of nationalism are probably to be found amongst the ancient Hebrews,who thought of themselves as a chosen people.In other parts of the world,nationalism grew as strong centralized kingdoms were built from small feudal states,as regional languages and art forms evolved,and as local economies widened.It was in the 19th century,that nationalism became a widespread and powerful force.The spirit of nationalism took an especially strong hold in Germany ,under thinkers like the poet Johann Gottfried Herder.In thd latter half of the 19th century there were strong nationalist movements among the people in the countries ruled by European and the British empires.
