This is a very ancient issue, going back to the times of Wallace and Edward. Scottish Independence will be an issue with many ancient overtones. As a young folk performer on a Christmas train to Toronto, I had the pleasure to sit next to a lovely and intelligent young woman, an English prof from MSU. I had just just learned this ballad and started reading about its history and began to discuss it with her. Within five minutes an American Scot, a Canadian Scot, and a Canadian Brit (the Campbells were allied with English King William, who built our William and Mary College) all began heatedly enjoining on the issue of who was responsible for the massacre at Glencoe.
