In honor of Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness week I have decided to - TopicsExpress

In honor of Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness week I have decided to post some of my own story. (throughout the week.....arent you people lucky) I was diagnosed with Crohn’s about a year ago and even though this disease can be tough to handle at times I have tried to find the humor in my everyday struggles. So here goes….. My list of life as a “Crohnie” or “Gut Buster” (See we have really cool nick names) 1. My favorite question from people: Can I catch Crohn’s from you? (Seriously was asked this one time) nope sorry people you can’t…Its genetic…I won the genetic pool in my family on this one. 2.I know where all the cleanest and coolest public bathrooms are wherever I go. yep just ask I can tell ya .. excpecially in the Canal Winchester area or the commute in and around OSU. I got ya covered...Oh and I always am stocked up with toilet paper..the good stuff… when I am in “flare up” youtry to wipe you’re a$$ with that thin stuff …it starts to hurt. So nothing but the best for this girl :) 3. My doc and me When I first met my GI Doc and after my diagnosis I am pretty much sure he had no idea how to take me. I tried to joke about what I was about to deal with but he was all serious and shit. I think I finally got him on the dark side with “look doc…I know what I am up against but look at it this way….You are my butt buddy for life”..(Yep I said it)…yep he stared at me…. but smiled a second later..I knew I had him :) since then he braces for our visits and my off the wall jokes.. Which are plenty. 4. There is no pill bottle big enough Life as a Crohnie means pills..lots of them. Currently I am on 15 a day. Unfortunantly, with this disease I do not absorb enough nutrients in food to sustain myself..so besides the meds to help control the progression of Crohn’s I have to take additional vitamins. This is determined by blood work (later will discuss this joy) so whatever vitamin I am lacking that’s the supplement I get to take. Currently I am on iron, B12, and vitamin D/calcium. But hey I look at it this way…they all come in such pretty shapes and sizes and in about a month I might get to change them out or add too...:) Till tomorrow its only Monday :)
