In honor of Holy Week, I just got done watching George Stevens - TopicsExpress

In honor of Holy Week, I just got done watching George Stevens penultimate film The Greatest Story Ever Told, from 1965. Yes, in this case, the Book is better, but there is still much to recommend it. Some of the performances, many not much more than cameos, are good, as is Alfred Newmans Oscar-nominated score (even if he does steal sizable chunks of Handel and Verdi). Best of all, though, is William Mellor and Winston Hochs cinematography, which was also Oscar-nominated (losing, understandably, to Freddie Youngs work for Doctor Zhivago). The use of light and shadow, especially in the restored version now out on DVD and Blu-Ray, is striking.
