In honor of Mike Breckers birthday yesterday I want to share a story that has stayed with me and helped me as a person and as a teacher and musician. I also will never forget a great lesson I learned after a concert Michael Brecker had given in Binghamton, NY in 1990 which I attended. He was on tour with his band playing music from his recent solo records on Impulse and GRP. The highlight of the evening for me was a solo version he did on Skylark which was a tour de force of beauty, elegance, technical ferocity and virtuosity and true passion. I broke down crying in the middle of it and felt as if I had no business playing the saxophone or being a musician as I would never ever be able to play on this level. One of my older students was in the audience that night and saw me after the concert. I guess I looked like I had been hit by a truck and he asked if I was OK. I told him I was really embarrassed to be his teacher after what he had both just witnessed and said something to the effect that I would certainly understand if he didnt want to study with me anymore. He told me that there will always be people in the world that are better than you and always people not as able as you are. Period... The sooner you can realize that, the sooner you can strip off the ego and just do what it is you do to the best of your ability. If you bring integrity, honesty and hard work to your efforts (in any endeavor) you will have something to offer in this world. And you will be successful. I thank Tom Exter for this lesson. It has stayed with me ever since that night. I still listen to Maestro Brecker several times a week and he never ceases to bring me to tears of joy, humility and several other descriptors. I also learned that night never to stay in a relationship with someone who questions or criticizes what you do.... I met my wife two years later and asked her to marry me after a mere 9 month courtship. She is my biggest inspiration. Life lessons....
