In light of events that have happened here in Belize and knowing it will happen again........here is my post.......Promoters/Business/Churches/Artists. The Event Planning and Promotion Scene at a Glance In recent years the popularity of dancehall music has declined tremendously and much of it can be attributed to the imprisonment of dancehall superstar Vybz Cartel and the consequent effect that had on the marketing capability of upcoming acts. Dancehall music is a vehicle of progression and consistency in an industry where upcoming dancehall acts are endorsed by elders or seniors in the industry. With Adijah Palmer (Kartel) out of the picture, the New Era Dancehall Throne is up for grabs. Now, some might choose to differ, but the truth remains that had he not been incarcerated, the stability of the industry and the economic feasibility of the industry would still be on track; because as in the fashion of some of his mentors, he understood the concept of Censorship. Censorship of music is the practice of restricting free access to musical works whether it by influence and or legislations by Governments of the World, organizations with influence such as the churches, NGO’s or as simple as a family’s patriarch or matriarch and now-LGBT Communities. Make no mistake, I am in no way fighting Governments or the churches fight, just making an observation and stating a point. This censorship may stem from a wide variety of motivations, including moral, political, military, groups with special interest or religious reasons. Censorship can range from the complete government-enforced legal prohibition of a musical work, to private, voluntary removal of content when a musical work appears in a certain context. An example of this latter form of censorship is the radio edit, we can discuss that further some other time. The point that needs to be made is that whatever genre of music you choose to perform, people have free reign to listen and support or not. In September ,Belizean Promoters for Alkaline took a hard blow in Belize (but I feel the media didnt have much news that day - so they decided or were coerced into airing Bishops Wrights press release). Now, for those of us who are in tuned with the business of Event Planning and Promotion Business in Belize; it can be said it was sabotage (maybe or maybe-not). For others, just bad luck for the promoters. The undeniable fact remains, Promoters in the country of Belize have traditionally hired regional and/or international acts coupled with Belizean Acts to bolster attendance and ticket sales. Nothing is wrong with that, but why does it seem that copy-catting Bishop Dorick Wrights press release to the media, another group is using the platform of Entertainment to push their agenda? A blueprint of legal action needs to be unearthed and filed with the courts in relation to efforts by group like these and others, to let them know that Hard Working Belizean Promoters will not stand by idly and be marginalized based on an Artist right to be creative. We havent spoken about other business people or promoters who are mission men/women for this cause, a next time!!
