In memoriam- memories of the big brother Lawrence Magee;) I miss his whit and wisdom :( Notes for Debbie regarding memories of Larry by Ellie The one thing that stands out in my memory of Larry when I was three or four and had to be hospitalized for surgery. Larry did what any big brother would do and spent time at the hospital with me while Mom took care of my older sisters at home. I remember feeling scared but he comforted me and even hugged me so that I could sleep. When I was older I had become fond of drawing, painting and writing so much that he helped me with my spelling and reading the stories that I wrote. Into high school he was back at LSU working on yet another degree and he read my stories for the school newspaper and quietly encouraged me by getting journalism, writing books for marketing my stories. Even though the subjects that I loved were far from statistics he encouraged me through my love of animals and the natural sciences by questioning and challenging my knowledge. He would ask more questions and I would find an answer if I didnt know it right away. When I became challenged by a disability and pursued training my own Service Dog after training Horses and dogs over many years, he supported my passion for helping others through this endeavor. Even though he was known not to share my love of dogs I assured him that All dogs could be taught to some degree to respond and do jobs for us. They could learn but only need the motivation. When I told him about forming a non profit WAGS, LA he didnt laugh but told me he thought that it might work. Through the years we shared love of reading and he would often let me borrow books. Series of James Bond , Homers Iliad and Oddessy mixed in. I loved to read and he lived to share knowledge. He would often write out lists of stories and books that I needed to read. Within the last week of his life I shared my memory of my childhood hospital stay with him and told him what that meant to a three to four year old. He said yeah, he understood. We were there for each other when we needed to be. Debbie, BABS and I stood by the bedside with Mom and everyone coming by to say something and to hold his hand. He asked for a cola for a drink and I told him, yeah thats the good stuff. Not everyone is given the gift to tell others how much they mean to you. I think he did just that. Sent from my iPhone
