In memory of my father Three years ago today Dear Dad you exhaled your final breath Your soul then flew to freedom, your body paled in death. I was privileged to hold your hand and kiss your cooling brow Relieved at last that pain was gone, all suffering over now. What memories you’ve left behind, though it was not all fun Times were very hard for you when Mom died way too young, But you never faltered and did the best you could Telling stories, writing poetry; and we all understood That we girls were so lucky to have you as our Dad And we smile and laugh together at the good times that we had. Thank you for the example you gave us every day Of how to keep on going despite obstacles in the way To make the best of what we’ve got, and never fail to learn So three cheers from your children, Ger, Phil, Bridie, Peg and Helen.
