In my five Sundance festivals, Ive never seen a star mobbed after a film as I saw tonight at the US Premiere of White God. Which was a little scary since the star was a dog named Body and the audience had just watched him kill a bunch of humans in a crazy revenge/action thriller thats an allegorical nature of dark side of man. For my money, Ill take the dogs of Budapest over any of the Planet of the Ape movies that weve been deluged with. The alternate title could be A Girl and Her Dog where Lila is dumped off at her fathers after her mother gets a three month assignment in Australia. At Lilas side is her only friend and companion, a mutt named Hagen. But the Budapest they live in has nosy neighbors and a tax on dogs that arent purebred. So the father leaves the dog by the side of the road and the girl and her dog are separated. What happens to the dog in the next act is horrible, cruel and inhumane (dont worry, all the humane rules were followed and all the dogs were adopted). Hagen is abused. Hes given steroids and enhancers. Hes beated and trained. Hes turned into a killing machine. And then he gets out. With two hundred of his friends. And now were into Charles Bronson/Clint Eastwood revenge territory. This isnt a perfect movie, but quite frankly, this kind of movie hasnt been seen before and its pretty thrilling. An army of dogs has taken over Budapest. It will also provoke intense reaction from dog lovers everywhere. But I think its nutty, when Ive seen so much death, destruction and betrayal in a lot of these films with humans and the audience accepts it and moves on, but if it happens to a dog, I can feel the visceral reaction from the audience. If you watch at home, make sure you put Fido in the next room. Otherwise he may get some ideas. It will be released theatrically on March 27th. Three and a half stars out of four.
