In my last post talked about electronic control boards and the communication errors that can happen between them and the difficult task of determining which board or harness connection is at fault. The manufactures solution of throwing parts at a machine until it works is great when under warranty. Once out of warranty though this method of repair ensures two things: 1) The customer no longer trusts their machine and 2) The customer will most always buy a new machine instead of spending five hundred dollars on a repair or more. Both results end in a sale of a new machine. There is one more component to this Control Board Conundrum and that is control boards and other parts required for operating are becoming No Longer Available within five years of a products sale. Just this month we ran into a top of the line Maytag front load washer with a burnt control board and the part was no longer available and the machine was sold in 2010. It was still in wonderful condition as it was in a second home that is visited three or four times a year. In other words it was hardly used. Just so I am not appearing to pick on only one manufacturer, I am seeing this same type of parts availability more and more among all manufacturers. (Except Sub Zero) Now compare that story to the fact I ordered a timer for a Maytag washer from 1993 2 weeks ago and it was still available! So our task as a repair company in 2014 trying to provide good service gets complicated. The low parts supplies for these late model appliances assure that they will be replaced much more often than the generation of appliances that came before. It is the world we live in and it is not going to change, so just remember these facts I presented when the appliance salesman is up selling you to the next level of washer or refrigerator or dishwasher. You can pay $1800.00 for a dishwasher that might not have crucial parts available for it in five to seven years so save his breath and ask too see the mid range units in the $500.00 to $700.00 range. That is all for now.. Stay tuned for my next topic... Warranty, what is covered and what is not.
