In my readings I am learning about various styles and methods of art therapy and trying on different approaches to see where I might fit... Apparently I might be a postmodern, existential, humanistic art therapist who believes in a transpersonal, narrative approach with Gestalt underpinnings who embraces and encourages spiritual expression and exploration through a variety of expressive arts in a studio setting. I guess I am less interested in psychodynamic art therapy and cognitive-behavioral approaches, even though I just finished a research project on someone who was definitely psychodynamic in approach... So.... Eclectic, much, Beth? LOL I dont know if my 23 semesters (when I am finished teaching) of Seeing Sideways give me enough experience to really embrace eclecticism as successfully as I might need, but it sure feels right to me as I read through this stuff... In human words, I want for people to be able to use creativity (mainly art) to explore and understand themselves and focus on the here and now so they can see the path that is right for them and live the life that allows them to achieve their highest potential as a human being and know (and feel) that they (and others) have worth and value. So what could possibly be so hard about that, she asks innocently...?
