In one of my undergrad papers, I presented the proposal that the elements of indentureship per se and the social system that gave rise to its horrific origins albeit historical were as inhumane as slavery itself and in specific instances exceeded the brutality of slavery. The anomie and loss of hope expressed in the daily lives of the indentured servants in many continents across the planet lead to thousand of indentured servants taking their own lives often in incredibly distressing circumstances. It is not that I am bitter against the British or any group responsible for the events that unfolded again albeit indentureship in some ways resembles the botanic process of human pollination that lead to persons like myself being born in the Western hemisphere. What I find reprehensible is when the generations that are borne on the incredible sacrifices of indentured servants regard their own history and culture as inferior to other cultures and tries very hard to disassociate themselves from the wonderful legacy and outstanding contribution by these simple folks whose main priority encapsulated the journey across the kala pani in search of a better life.
