In one respect the Prophet Muhammad in his day was a feminist. The doctrine he layed out was an improvement for the status of women in 7th century Arabia. His Islamic law made the education of girls a sacred duty, and gave women the right to own and inherit property. But ancient advances dont mean much 14 centuries later. It is clear that in most Muslim countries the religion does not liberate but entrenches the inequalities for women. The greatest degree of equality is found in Turkey where Islamic precepts have been overthrown in favor of secular rule . Even thou Muhammad proclaimed new rights for women he also believed they were not equal, as passed down by the laws of God. I know its easy to point out fingers, and justifiably so. Let us not forget that Christianity has not always treated women as equals. I believe there is a underlying principal of human nature. That is to always hold back what you are afraid of. In saying that, maybe the biggest mistake the Islamic radicals have made is arming women.
