“In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations”—Iroquois Yesterday I spent the day at Buvuma Island where we are in the initial stages of building a beautiful leadership training facility, the best in East Africa. That’s a story for another day. Let me share what I learned about stewardship. At the ferry station, I met a government employee driving a government car. While all other cars were switched off as we waited for the felly, this man kept his engine running for more than half an hour. Who does that? “Doesn’t he know that fuel must be conserved?” I asked the architects who were on the trip with me. I was not happy with his lack of stewardship so I spoke to him about it and he switched it off. What struck me though was his attitude that “the government always fuels the car”. This man is probably unhappy with his salary but cares less about contributing to the reduction in other government expenditures that consume the very finite box of funds that he wants to open for his salary increase. I see this all too often. While we may drive our own vehicles with utmost care, company vehicles endure all the pain we can put them through. An employee chooses to waste printer paper at work thinking, “this isn’t my home supplies?” but turns to HR to complain about welfare at the time HR’s budgets are being cut. What many don’t realize is that in this interconnected world, what we think isn’t ours actually has a bearing on how satisfactorily we live our lives. OVER TO YOU What can we do to change this ‘government employee’ attitude? How do we help people become better stewards?
