In recent years, one of the best pictures Ive grace in film Ive seen was from Les Miserables, based on Victor Hugos book of the same name. Jean Valjean is arrested for stealing from a priest who gave him food and shelter. The priest pushed the officials to let him go and even gives him more silver. Read how Hugo describes the impact such kindness (grace) had on Valjean: To this celestial kindness he opposed pride, which is the fortress of evil within us. He (Valjean) was indistinctly conscious that the pardon of this priest was the greatest assault and the most formidable attack which had moved him yet; that his obduracy was finally settled if he resisted this clemency; that if he yielded, he should be obliged to renounce that hatred with which the actions of other men had filled his soul through so many years, and which pleased him; that this time it was necessary to conquer or to be conquered; and that a struggle, a colossal and final struggle, had been begun between his viciousness and the goodness of that man. --- What an incredible picture. This priest showed undeserved kindness. The recipient was wrecked because of it. He saw no other choice but to soften his heart and embrace the grace and kindness that he was shown. Imagine what would happen in our society if we were to offer to people the mercy that they need rather than the judgment we feel they deserve. God help me!
