In reflecting on where we are as a movement, it became clear that too many of our chants, especially the most popular ones, reinforce the myth of our powerlessness. I propose that we retire the phrases hands up, dont shoot, ...Please dont shoot me dead, and others like them. I propose that we retire die ins, because we dont need anymore practice in the art of death, and in dying we become the objects of their cruel fantasies. Lets do live ins -- dancing, celebrations of our lives, revelations of the fullness of our beauty and power, thus reinforcing the necessity of our lives as black people. Hands up because Im shouting. Hands up because Im dancing Hands up because Im living. Hands up because Im reaching to the heavens to bless my creator. Not hands up because Im surrendering.
