In response to Eoins post about Gabbys apparent loyalty for the club, I thought Id have my own say on his new contract extension. Unlike Eoin, I dont believe that Gabby signing a new contract was in any way an act of loyalty; more of a sensible choice by one of the luckiest men in English football. Gabby knows (as well as most of us) that other clubs wouldnt consider giving him such an easy ride, and neither would they offer him such big money and somehow always a place in the first team like we are currently doing. This was nothing more than a stupid and naïve decision made by the club, as Gabby will feel even more comfortable know that his place at the club is not in jeopardy, and guaranteed at least another 4 years until he reaches the age of 31. I think its time he moved on. He has 1 good game in every 15, and just because hes a villa fan, were all expected to go mental about him after 1 decent performance (like so against Hull). He quite simply isnt good enough, and for which it should have been a priority to go out and find a replacement or at very least add depth to the position, instead of the unjustified actions of offering the under-achieving winger a 4 year extension. I find it incredulous how fortunate he has been in his career, and I dont believe any other club would have been so lenient on his succession of lacklustre performances, with the occasional good game. Although, even I am found guilty for liking gabby just because of where he is from and his love for the club. So instead of abusing me for appearing to insult our most capped player, put your affections for the man to one side and think about it logically - does he really deserve such a generous reward for a series of poor and uninspiring performances; that we all witnessed last season. Even if you disagree, please do not call this loyalty, it is more an act of a man who knows that things wouldnt be so good if he went elsewhere. -Jonesy #avfc UTV
