In response to Mr Nicholas Fangs Parliamentary Question on the measures that will be taken to ensure that the South-east Asian Games 2015 will leave a lasting legacy for the development of sports, in particular, encouraging the growth of the sports industry in Singapore. Minister Lawrence Wong shared that MCCY is working on three areas to ensure a lasting legacy for sports in Singapore. We will continue to invest in the long term development of our top athletes through the High Performance Sports system. These investments will continue beyond the SEA GAMES 2015. We will also focus on developing our full suite of facilities, most notably the new Sports Hub. The Singapore Sports Hub will boost our ability to host major and international sporting events. It will affirm our reputation as a global sports city. Thirdly, through the SEA Games, we will provide more opportunities for Singaporeans to participate in sports: whether as volunteers or spectators. The new Sports Hub will also help to draw more Singaporeans to watch the Games “live”. Minister Wong said that we will build on this to create a broader following for sports and for our Team Singapore athletes. In his reply to another question, Minister Wong gave the assurance that contingency plans are in place to mitigate the effects of haze on athlete preparation and the organisation SEA Games. This includes arranging for indoor training where possible and changes in competition schedules if necessary. For more responses in Parliament, visit bit.ly/1k87GYP
