In response to to the Daniel Handler fiasco at the National Book - TopicsExpress

In response to to the Daniel Handler fiasco at the National Book Awards—His comments were insensitive and inappropriate. He looked at his notes as he spoke—it was no accident—he meant to say it. Opinions and attitudes that one shares in the privacy of one’s home, and those comments that are appropriate to say in a public, televised forum are very different. Mr. Handler needs to learn that. Throwing money at the problem only obfuscates the issue and insults further. It does not erase the racism, nor is it a public apology. I was there. I am very proud of Jackie and I want the discussion to turn to the absolute beauty and power of her book, Brown Girl Dreaming, and away from the man who still has no clue. She deserves the news cycle, not him. Go and read Jackies book. It is glorious and very deserving of the prestige and honor of the National Book Award.
