In response to why veterinarians charge so much...As someone who works in the veterinary field, here are a few insights. Veterinarians spend 8-12 years in school and incur on average >100K in student loans, yet the average starting salary is $40-50K. While there are big box veterinary hospitals, most are small businesses. There are employees (which are invaluable) to pay, medications and supplies to have on hand, and equipment that rivals human hospitals to maintain...to name a few. Veterinarians are doctors, surgeons, counselors, accountants, animal advocates, etc. Veterinarians are some of the most compassionate people I know. You may not hear of the countless animals that are treated for free or very little cost, because most are not shameless self promoters. Or the veterinarian who is crying because he/she could not save a pet even though they could, or the veterinarian who helps your loving pet cross that rainbow bridge when that time comes (we carry that with us). So I take great offense to comments that we are in this job only for money. Yes, we do need to charge...we are a business and have responsibilities. Im sure there are clinics that may overcharge. Just like there are bad doctors, lawyers, etc. But, the majority of veterinarians are not this way. A mobile clinic is going to be cheaper because they have much lower expenses and generally work alone. A larger hospital with state of the art equipment, will cost more. People expect us to just give a shot and know what is wrong by just looking at the pet...sometimes this is the case. However, pets get all the same complicated diseases that humans get and this may require more of a diagnostic work up. Bottom line...find a .veterinarian that you are comfortable with and like. Not one single veterinarian is the right fit for everyone.
