In the Academy Award-nominated Selma, we see a monumental figure in history, Dr. Martin Luther King, taking on other major figures in a small Alabama town in the fight for equal voting rights. For those of us born after the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, the movie does an excellent job of pointing these major figures out to us — President Lyndon B. Johnson, infamous FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, eventual Congressman Andrew Young and other leaders of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), figures of authority in Alabama — except for one man: Bayard Rustin.
