In the Melbourne Cup today #verema was put down after suffering a broken cannon bone. Most of the news reporting hasnt mentioned this and if it has been its mostly been at the end of the article. Im not trying to enter the debate for or against horse racing. My point is more the astonishing discrepancy between the the value we place on human life as opposed to other animals (at least in the media). For instance, if a person died in a Rugby or AFL Grand Final, I imagine the mourning of the death would be much more substantial. It seems to me that more often than not when animals die in sport, we pass it off as being just something that happens in the sport or its just a horse, rather than making us reconsider the dangers we place those animals in (and possible need for reform of the industry), who are participating in a highly dangerous sport purely for our entertainment...
