Among the major rights are Freedom of religion, speech and the press. These are all part of the first Amendment. Federal and state laws coexist, but when there is a conflict in laws, federal law takes precedence. This is known as the Supremacy of federal law. The Supreme Court of the United States is the final judicial authority on the constitutionality of laws passed by the Congress and the state legislatures.
