In the United States, Laws come from constitutional law, statutory law, and common civil law. Constitutional law refers to both federal and state constitutions. Constitutional rights, protections and safeguards apply between the government and individuals only. Federal law refers to the U.S Federal Government. The Constitution of the United States is the highest source of law in the country. The bill of Rights consists of the first ten Amendments to the Constitution. Among the major rights are Freedom of religion, speech and the press. These are all part of the first Amendment. Federal and state laws coexist, but when there is a conflict in laws, federal law takes precedence. This is known as the Supremacy of federal law. The Supreme Court of the United States is the final judicial authority on the constitutionality of laws passed by the Congress and the state legislatures. Zakou Ismael: In addition, each of the individual states has its own state constitution. However, no law in the United States can violate the provisions of the U.S Constitution.
