In the Wednesday 16 issue of the Cowichan Citizen is an article about salaries for senior staff and exempt managers working for the CVRD . many in the public feel that they are excess compared to the private sector. This has lead to the creation committee to investigate the issue. They issued a report that many of the CVRD Directors found fault with. As a result after almost 2 hour debate Mayor Hutchins , who is the CVRD CHAIRMAN referee the matter to staff. Mayor Hutchins has to the best of my knowledge has never raised to he subject a any of our Council meetings. I believe that this is topic for our Council table. We should also be asking,, how much we are paying and is it excessive we should be looking at this issue for two reasons. First, we pay taxes to the CVRD, and the taxes we pay go into paying these salaries, and they can be controlled this can have an effect on how much we have pay in CVRD taxes. Secondly and more importantly, is the Mayor should let the rest of Council know, the public has deep concerns about what municipalities are paying staff. Resent reports from various sectors suggest that Municipal staff average over 18% more that private sector workers make for similar responsibilities. Why hasnt Mayor Hutchins raised the issue?
