In the below video, “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” activist (Reverend Jarrett Maupin) shoots an unarmed man and is actually thankful for it. He had an opportunity to experience firsthand three use of force training scenarios, courtesy the Maricopa County Sheriffs Department. He now has a new perspective when it comes to the split second decisions officers have to make on a daily basis. These decisions mean the difference between going home at the end of shift or not and it was a very eye opening experience for Reverend Maupin. After going through just three scenarios, Reverend Maupin has a whole new respect for just how quickly a situation can go from a minor encounter to a deadly use of force confrontation. Now he understands. “I didn’t understand how important compliance was,” he stated. “But after going through this, yeah, my attitude has changed.” “This is all unfolding in ten to fifteen seconds. People need to comply with the orders of law enforcement officers for their own safety.” Reverend Jarrett Maupin protested the shooting death of an unarmed drug dealer that was in a physical confrontation with police... yet Reverend Maupin shot an unarmed man in one of these scenarios. “I shot because he was in that zone,” Reverend Maupin explained, “I felt that was an imminent threat. I didn’t necessarily see him armed but he came clearly to do some harm to the officer, to my person.” Its very interesting to see what happens when someone is faced with what police see everyday. Isnt it a shame that these protesters and protest leaders are so quick to wrongly judge the actions of the police? I wish theyd ALL be put through scenarios like this, because no cop looks forward to or wants to needlessly take a human life.
