In the cast for the very first performance of the Metropolitan - TopicsExpress

In the cast for the very first performance of the Metropolitan Opera (on this day, October 22, in 1883) was a soprano named Christina Nilsson. (As far as I know, no relation to Birgit, if you know otherwise, please let me know.) Christina was supposedly the model for the singer in Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, “The Phantom of the Opera.” Nilsson was a famous soprano at that point, already having toured the U.S. to great acclaim, (continuing the tradition her countrywoman Jenny Lind began in 1850.) Through her second marriage, she became the Countes de Casa Miranda. Here is a website with a nice bio with pictures. cnsallskapet.se/engelska.html
