In the downtown of Bobo Dioulasso flows a stream, the Dafra, which serves as a workplace for a community of mainly women from Mali. My first contact with them was in 2003. Armed with my camera, I went down the path that leads to Dafra and asked the washerwomen if I could take some pictures. As the women were very reluctant, I went to the only two men squatting 20 meters away. After a short introduction, I was allowed to take pictures that I then developed and printed later in Denmark. Two years later, I brought a beautiful framed portrait to Ablaye, who was very pleasantly surprised to get his first photograph. Since then, I have become a known visitor among the community, and I visit them each time I return to Burkina Faso. I learned that these washerwomen are seasonal workers who make the journey from Mali to work in the water of Dafra during the dry season, leaving husbands and children behind in their home villages.
