In the fifteen years since Lansburys award-winning performance on the West End and Broadway, Gypsy had become a staple of regional and community theatres. But in 1989, producers, along with book writer and previous director Arthur Laurents felt the show was ready for another revival. After a few out-of-town tryouts across the country, the new production opened with TV cop, Tyne Daly, who would win the Tony for her Mama Rose.
