In the late 50s, we lived in Tanga, Tanzania on the corner of 4th St. Ngamiani, just before Barakas store on 5th Street. - Our apartment had a long balcony all around it! There was a wide deep ditch alongside the main road and if one wanted to jump over the ditch, one would need really long legs! (We children used to practice jumping over the ditch all the time!). 😄 My Dad used to be very particular at night about securing the two main doors of the apartment that opened into the balcony and we used to get fed up with Dads worry about closing every opening at night! My Mom kept a huge brass samovar in the corner of the balcony overlooking the kitchen and the main road. One night a big truck pulled alongside the huge ditch on the main road. In a few moments there was a thunderous sound of something being thrown into the truck, which took off in a great hurry! The samovar was gone! - The thieves used a huge plank to walk from the truck into our balcony. From that very moment, Dad commanded a doubly new respect at home! No arguments about locking each door and window securely! Phew! 😓
