In the mid 90s, none of us could have predicted that Nigerians - TopicsExpress

In the mid 90s, none of us could have predicted that Nigerians would expect 2015 with such eagerness. We never could think Abacha, Babangida and their ilk would mean so much less in national discuss. We dreamed of democracy, but we never believed it would come off the wings of the military. Our HOPE was hinged on MKO, we had vague idea how he was going to do it, we never knew a Nigerian could ever be paid or reorientated to blow up himself or take arm against his government, especially a democratically elected one. We never had an inkling of what lurks in the mind of those championing the call for democracy. We never knew they have nepotism, bribery, corruption of an unimaginable scale, bigotry and religious violence entrenched in the corners of their heart. Who were we to know back then that a guy, so ordinary, would become the president with little or no hassle. Funny and unbelievable would it have been that this said guy, that cant speak tough, even if he try, would come from the Niger Delta, a region we never knew would grow violent and militant too. Political alliances are on, political calculators are busy, pundits are growing, everybody is awaiting 2015 like we did 1993. Progressives are imbibing the doctrine of the conservatives. PDP is spending, APC is forming busy, some doing nothing. Opposition grows and wither, winning some, losing some. PDP got Ekiti back, APC retains its hold on Osun, Adamawa is a litmus test. Democracy is growing deeper. We are learning, it started with party over personality, now its personality over party, or so it appears, we may never know or be perfectly sure. Whatever it is, we are learning. Security, allegedly, cracked down on some bigwigs in Osun, they cried foul but never sue for compensation, is it because they won the election or because the Police gut paid off. Criticism and lies, but we daily learn to differentiate. Everybody looks up to 2015, but, like we did 1993, we may have some waiting and learning to do until our democracy is old and bold, then we can predict 2050 with better accuracy.
