In the old days Tamilnadu, too, guided by the vision and wisdom of its rulers and planners, had an excellent system of water conservation through its well planned network of ponds, tanks and lakes, making it self sufficient for its water needs. However, land sharks in cahoots with corrupt politicians and government executives have swallowed up huge areas of the water bodies, and now the state is eternally squabbling with its neighbours for the precious natural resource ! Most of the time Tamilnadus demands are unjustifiable, making it very unpopular with its neighbours. They are also strong advocates of the harebrained and environmentally disastrous programme of river interlinking ! If only they would rein in the corrupt elements and resurrect the old time tested methods of water conservation !
