In the pre-Civil War south, the white aristocrat slave owners were in complete control of the wealth in the South. The free labor provided by slavery allowed them to dominate the markets, meaning even poor whites werent able to compete with the production of the slave plantations. Now after growing all these crops, the plantation owners would then sell their crops to the North and to Europe, but instead of reinvesting that wealth in the South, they used it to import fancy manufactured goods from the same people they sold the crops to. The wealthiest of the wealthy funneled all the wealth right out of the economy, so much so, that the American south is STILL the poorest part of our country, for both whites and blacks living in the area.
