In the summer/fall of 1963, I was patrolling in the Westville - TopicsExpress

In the summer/fall of 1963, I was patrolling in the Westville section with my almost new 1963 Chevy Biscayne black police car. The old 1961 Chevy had a blinking red light on top of the car but this one had the newer gumball style revolving emergency light on top. I drove over to the Yale Golf Course to check the maintenance shop where they store and repair the lawn cutting equipment and golf carts. Some recent thefts of the equipment were reported. I had to cross one of the greens on a dirt road to get to the maintenance shop. I stopped and looked both ways. No one was visible. As I started to cross, BANG. Red, white and yellow glass and plastic pieces bounced off the hood. My gum ball machine was shattered. A player had hit the light with a golf ball. Suddenly 3 or 4 guys came running toward my police car. Are you alright Officer, one asked? I guess so. I took the mans named who hit the ball and made out a report of damage to police property. It was not his fault. It was not my fault either because this is part of my patrol area and I am responsible for anything on my beat. Especially since at roll call, the Sergeant read off to check the maintenance shop as often as time allowed. I drove to the police garage on 710 Sherman Parkway and reported the damage to the Sergeant in charge. How the hell did that happen, Bob? I got hit with a golf ball Serge. In Westville? Where are there golf balls in Westville? Yale Golf Course Serge. Where the hell am I going to get another emergency light on a new police car? I never seen one get broke before. Me neither Serge. Are you BSing Bob? No Serge. Here is the guys name that broke it with his golf ball. I had to drive an old police car for the next 2 weeks until a new emergency light was ordered and installed on my car. You just cant make this stuff up.
