In the weekly magazine Parade, astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson asserted: “You will never find scientists leading armies into battle. You just won’t. Especially not astrophysicists.” Historian of science Patrick McCray takes issue with that assertion. Although he doesnt cite any astronomer generals or admirals, he does point to numerous examples of physicists and astronomers who were active participants in their countries war-fighting efforts - in times of war and times of peace.
