In the words of Roy Orbison, It’s Over, however I think my baby still loves me. Liam and Tom took the men’s doubles crown, beating Graham and yours truly 7-6, 6-2. The first set was a titanic struggle that swung to and fro culminating in a tie break after the old guys had 2 set points to win the set 7-5. The second set was, errr, less competitive as the youngsters went 4-0 up, making good use of the age difference of 70 years (just wait ‘til we get you home). So congratulations to Liam and Tom who at least had the good manners to keep me in beer for the afternoon. The ladies doubles was a tremendous game that could have gone either way. Helen and Maria taking the first set 6-4 before Marie and Collette stormed back 6-3, 7-5. The final set was full of opportunities for both couples and the overall result hinged on a couple of critical points late in the final set. Maria won’t be happy for me to remind her of the air shot at the net at deuce 5-6 so I won’t – oh wait. So congratulations to Marie and Collette. Tomorrow, we have the two singles and the mixed doubles, the bar is fully stocked so come on down to help de-stock it. I’m off to sulk – again.
