In the work that I have done thus far in teaching the courses Corporate Governance, Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, and in my readings on Leadership and Human Resource Management, one common thread that I have noticed is that people matter in organizations and that their contributions should be valued. Of course I have always known this but coming from so many directions made me begin to take a closer look at how people in Caribbean Organizations are managed. From the reports that I receive from time to time, it seems to me that people in some Caribbean organizations are seen as mere cogs in the organizational wheel to ensure the productivity of the organization without taking into consideration that production is done by people with feelings, dreams, ideas etc. This ideology of how people should be managed by some Caribbean people does not make sense when viewed against the background that in the region, people are the only real resources that we have . When we examine countries with much more resources than we do, people are so valued that their Board structures are designed to reflect this. In many German Organizations, there are two Boards. One to see after the interest of the employees and the other the financial and other matters. In some Caribbean organizations, the leaders care so little about the employees that their Human Departments are headed by non Human Resource Management Specialists people who do not know a Rats Backside about Human Resource Management or have a clue about General Management principles. Some of these people also lack the interpersonal communication skills to deal with people. The leaders simply impose these clueless people on their Human Resource Departments and expect their employees to respond positively.
