In theory, do we think its possible that SM has a lot of different variations across a spectrum? 3 categories come to my mind when thinking about this: 1. Traumatic - An event that triggers high levels of anxiety resulting in selective mutism. 2. Genetic - Family history of extreme social anxiety. and 3. (perhaps a more interesting theory Ive heard) Relocation - Generally common in families whove made moves across the country (U.S.) or to ANOTHER country, resulting in the development of social anxiety due to language and cultural barriers.
