In this research, University of Michigan (UM) and Michigan State University - SPARTANS researchers have identified a completely new way to reduce fibrosis. By blocking a central step in the process that leads to fibroblast activation and collagen synthesis, we expect this to be more effective than current approaches. Our critical next step is to ensure that the compounds that we have discovered are safe. Short studies in mice look good but before it is safe to move to humans, more needs to be done to assess safety. We are moving quickly to test an improved version of the compound in such studies, said Dr. Dinesh Khanna, Frederick G. Huetwell Professor of Rheumatology and Director, UM Scleroderma Program (med.umich.edu/scleroderma); Dr. Scott Larsen, Director of the Vahlteich Medicinal Chemistry Core, University of Michigan; and Dr. Rick Neubig, Professor and Chair, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Michigan State University. uofmhealth.org/news/archive/201404/u-m-msu-researchers-find-switch-scleroderma
