Income inequality is amongst the most provocative compelling issues of our time. Dramatic inequality is anathema to a sustainable, productive, flourishing society. Daniel Goleman, renowned for his work in Emotional Intelligence, reviews the science relating power to empathy. Research shows that people with the most social power pay scant attention to those with little power. Reducing the economic gap may be impossible without also addressing a gap in empathy. While empathy is a value that can be taught, we must teach it as early as possible to our youngest. They are not only the most capable of learning, but have lifetimes ahead to contribute to the world through that lens.Old brains are not easily reshaped. To effect dramatic world change, we need to look to future generations, for whom empathy is part of an epigenetic DNA.
