Incoming transmission from STARFLEET. ---- Begin Communication ---- I have two pieces of really exciting news! The first piece of news is that the SFI.ORG website is finally back on its Dreamhost server, and it has a totally new look and organization that is streamlined and very professional-looking. Webmaster Laura Victor worked incredibly hard alongside her entire web development team to completely revamp the website from its old layout on an outdated platform to a really solid WordPress-based website. Check it out at sfi.org and I think you’ll be very pleasantly surprised. (As a side note, a lot of time and effort went into checking for bugs and bad links and other glitches, but nobody’s perfect. Our site literally has hundreds of pages and thousands of links. If you find something that isn’t working right or information that is incorrect or out of date, please report it directly to Laura Victor at [email protected]. We appreciate all the help we can get in making our website as problem-free as possible.) The second piece of news should delight anyone who has been clamoring for “MORE STAR TREK!” in our club. I’m both pleased and incredibly excited to announce that STARFLEET has teamed up with “Star Trek: Axanar” to become their official fan club partner. For those not familiar with the Axanar project, it’s taking the idea of a Star Trek “fan film” to another level: professional independent film. The full length feature (which will ultimate be available for free to fans on the Internet) will star many alumni from Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, including Tony Todd (Kurn and older Jake Sisko), J.G. Hertzler (Martok), Gary Graham (reprising his role as an older Ambassador Soval from “Enterprise”), and from Battlestar Galactica Richard Hatch (Apollo from the original and Tom Zarek from the reboot), Kate Vernon (Ellen Tigh from the reboot), and Michael Hogan (Colonel Tigh from the reboot). The film was written by and stars Alec Peters as a young Captain Garth (seen in the TOS episode “Whom Gods Destroy) and chronicles the Four Years War between the Federation and the Klingons, which took place two decades before Kirk took command of the Enterprise. In fact, Michael Hogan will be playing Captain Robert April, taking out the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 on its shakedown mission. Sets for both TOS and the earlier era of Starfleet are being constructed in Los Angeles, and many production professionals who worked on various incarnations of Star Trek on the small and big screen will be working behind the scenes on Axanar, as well. The more I learn about this project, the more excited I get! And I’m ecstatic that they’ve partnered up with STARFLEET. So what does that mean exactly? Well, on the most basic level, it means we are going to help each other reach a wider fan base of Trekkers. They will provide links to SFI.org on their website and in their media press releases. We in turn will provide links from our site back to theirs, encouraging donations to their upcoming Kickstarter fundraiser this summer. Their first Kickstarter set out to raise $10,000 and instead wound up with over $100,000 in just 30 days (WOW)!!! This provided the team enough funds to make a shorter film titled “Prelude to Axanar”–a History Channel type documentary with the characters in costume and full make-up–that will serve as a “proof of concept” of what they can do when they begin their big Kickstarter push next month. Their ultimate goal is to make it to $500,000 to make the best independent Star Trek film ever, and STARFLEET is set to help in any way we can. That means having our members donate (if they want to), but even if some members can’t afford it, we can all still tell our friends and spread the word. The more fans who know about this, the better. Axanar will also be providing us with a copy of “Prelude to Axanar” to show at IC this August, along with some cool table displays that they will ship to us. They’re also planning to supply us with some exclusive merchandise to auction at IC as a special fundraiser for them. In the meantime, they’re supplying some awesome content for CQ #179, including a full-length article, interviews with some of their cast, photos of the characters from the two days of filming “Prelude” last month, schematics and CG imagery of some of their amazing starships, and a really eye-catching CQ cover announcing our partnership. This has all been in the planning stages for months, and a lot of work has gone into making this partnership a reality. We wanted everything to be set up and perfect before making the announcement, and now that I’ve made it here, we’re also featuring it on our new SFI.org website, and Axanar will shortly be announcing the partnership on their website, as well.
